Let’s face it, the truth is, tutup lampu just for one hour takkan bagi byk impact to environment. This makes some think earth hour is just another stupid, dumb & foolish act. Ask yourself,
1. brapa kali you leave TV alone xde org tengok? (g toilet, amek air nak minum sbb haus etc)
2. brapa kali pulak turun bawah tak tutup lampu bilik atas?
3. Keluar rumah tak tutup lampu atas alasan security?
Tambah tolak bahagi darab, mmg for sure all those wastage lebih banyak drpd one hour saving time earth hour kan? But then, does it makes this earth hour really stupid + useless? Yang best, ade pulak org reka artikel bentuk report newspaper ckp TNB nak sue WWF sebab Earth Hour menyebabkan power wastage. Memang artikel tu so real except dia punya content sgt menggelikan hati.
One thing about NGO, they can do nothing except put pressure to kerajaan, company atau apa-apa persatuan komuniti. Kalau takde CUEPACS, takkan ade le orang nak menyuarakan kehendak cuti selepas bersalin di tambah another 30 hari. So mcm kind of check & balance.
Dalam dunia kapitalis sekarang, semua syarikat mementingkan “kadar keuntungan”. Walaupun dah untung juta-juta, tp masih lagi nak untung billion-billion pulak; and that’s is normal. Cuma bila tergelojoh mengejar keuntungan dunia, sifat kesederhanaan tu makin hilang bila hikmah takde.
No matter what it takes, kita buat jugak demi “kadar keuntungan” (syarikat GLC nak untung lebih, shareholder ASB nak dividen lebih, pekerja pun nak gaji lebih & nak bonus lebih etc). Tu yg tebang balak sampai licin, curik pasir sampai togel, buat banglo sampai tanah runtuh etc.
To me, this Earth Hour kind of reminder, brape byk kita dh sacrifice something for something. And this something can be anything, bukan stakat lampu je. Maybe your family, friends, dream etc. But in this case how desperate are we sampai compromise environment la.
And hopefully, bila tengok banyak orang yg support this effort, syarikat2 pun start monetizing this “emerging demand” in a mass & commercial way supaya jd lebih sustainable in long term; kereta pakai solar or air ke (Toyota), LCD screen pakai LED ke (Samsung) or even disposable pampers to cloth diapers (Mommy bile nak berhijrah?Hehe).
The question on Earth Hour ni stupid or not is really depend on how you look at it. If you want to send a message to the world leader (policy maker & business or corporate owner) I think shouldn’t be problem, lagi pun jimat gak bil api sikit2. But kalau nak harap direct impact dan kesan segera, mmg it looks fool to you.
