I’m not a big fan of Azizi Ali. I’m not sure exactly why but probably because most of his advice & tips are geared toward beginners. Having said that, I have great respect on his sincere effort to educate Malaysian on personal finance subject.
And I recently found his advice on one of the article in the Malaysian Business (can’t remember exactly which month) about buying new home. His tip for home buyer this time is “Move to Better Neighbourhood as You Grow Wealthier”.
If you notice, his single advice is exactly the same as my blog post before about buying dream home. Still remember?
Azizi Ali’s article first started by giving example of one of his pilot friends who live in terrace house (somewhere in Shah Alam if not mistaken, pls correct me if you find me wrong). As he grow wealthier (I think because of bonuses and salary increment), he spend so much on renovation to the extend of adding another storey.
Soon enough his house become the most luxurious one in that housing estate. It is so obvious that his home easily become the first target for robbers & thieves. There are several occasions that threaten the family before they decided to move out later.
In general, most of us will enjoy more wealth as time goes by. This especially true when you were blessed with another baby born since Allah will grow the child ‘through you’. More kids you have, wealthier you become I guess (Orang kata, rezeki anak). As you were considering for an upgrade home, neighbourhood should be above all buying criteria.
To me, home upgrade is not only about moving from high-rise condo to landed properties or from terrace-house to bungalow. If that’s all mean to you, you won’t get more than just a ‘house’. I think we should upgrade to better lifestyle instead. And getting high quality lifestyle depends so much on the type of people who live in it. Therefore, neighbourhood is really nothing more than everything to me.
With good mixed of neighbour,
- You can surround yourself with high quality people who can better shape your thinking.
- Rest assured your kids has minimum ‘wasting time’ problems since they are educated enough to know that merempit is not good at all.
- Your parents can easily find good friends for their social activities; which normally about religious subject.
Most importantly, your family can have enough social activity on weekends than just spending hundreds if not thousands of ringgit at major shopping complex every single week.
The problems is, what makes a neighbourhood considered good? And which location or area deserves the label of ‘good neigborhood’?
Maybe you can share your experience living in your current neighbourhood so that other mommies can consider such point when they plan to buy a dream house….
